Opening Date 2001
The Gateway evolved as part of the redevelopment of downtown Salt Lake City prior to the 2002 Olympics. As lead architect and planner Michael Hong designed the enormous open air retail, residential, entertainment and office complex in the heart of a dying downtown around the historic Union Pacific depot. Integrating the endemic frontier style of the depot with a contemporary idiom, Mike created a unique and vibrant multi-level urban center. Its fluid circulation and compelling design helped to restore life back to downtown Salt Lake City.
The first phase included 2.1 million sq. ft. (195,096 m?) of mixed-use development including the Gateway Mall, office complexes, the Northgate Apartments and the renovated depot. Other highlights include the Clark Planetarium, the Megaplex 12 at The Gateway, the Discovery Gateway children's museum, and the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper.
Gateway stands out as an unparalleled success of urban redevelopment.
